The One Who Could

Look back at the hallway now and it looks smaller than it used to. Same building, different pair of eyes walking through it. Everyone kept waiting for somebody else to go first. Turns out somebody else was always going to be this one.

Nobody handed this over. Nobody crowned it, announced it, explained it. It got done quietly, the way most real things get done. The kid who used to count cracks in the sidewalk is the reason somebody else stopped looking down.

Funny thing about waiting for permission. Nobody was ever going to hand it out. It was never anybody else's to give. It was sitting right here the entire time.
