Meet Do
Do is the home note (the tonic): low, warm, and the note every melody is built to return to. A scale climbs away from Do through Re-Mi-Fa-Sol-La-Ti and almost always resolves back down to Do at the end, the same way a story leaves home and comes back changed. Companion to Meet the Musix on the Musix ladder (Musics category).
Down at the bottom of every scale I hum, round and warm and low, every song that ever started, started right here, you know, six more notes go climbing off to see how high they'll reach, I stay low and hold the ground, patient as the beach.
Re steps up, then Mi comes shining, Fa and Sol climb through, La goes swinging, Tee keeps reaching for a brand new view, far above me seven voices scatter toward the sky, I keep humming underneath them, wondering how high.
When the climbing's finished and the highest note rings clear, something pulls the whole song homeward, back to where I hear footsteps landing soft beside me, tired from the climb, home again at Do, right on time.
I'm the first note and the last one too, every beginning and every ending comes back through, lullabies and marches both come find me in the end, the low warm hum a song returns to, over and over again.
Hum me first, hum me last, hum me deep and slow, I'm Do, the place a melody always knows to go.
