Meet Frenda

Liking is the pull to say yes more easily to someone who seems warm, similar to you, or fun to be around, even when that warmth has nothing to do with whether their claim or their offer is actually good. A companion to Meet the Persuadix, giving Frenda her own spotlight through a plain narrative about a friendly new kid, teaching how to keep the warmth and still check the ask, never how to fake friendliness to sell something.

Frenda showed up smiling, said she loved my favorite band, laughed at all my jokes, and reached to shake my hand, said we're basically twins, same shoes, same shade of blue, by lunchtime I liked her so much, I'd have believed most things she said too, then she pulled out a signup sheet, a raffle, a small ten-dollar ask, wrapped inside the warmth, so smooth I almost skipped the task, of checking if the raffle's even real, or checking where the money goes, liking someone fast doesn't mean the fine print shows, a person can be warm and true, and still be selling something too, the smile is not a signature, a smile is only what smiles do, I like Frenda, I really do, that part of the day was real, and I still read the sheet myself before I sign a single deal, liking fast is a feeling, worth noticing, worth naming clear, it's not proof of the product, it's proof that she's fun to be near, a real friend likes you back when the pitch is over and done, a pitch-friend fades the second the signup sheet is gone, so keep the warmth, keep the laugh, keep the friend if she's true, and keep your own eyes open on whatever she wants from you.
