The City
Advanced companion to Meet Polis, dropping the character persona to address the real technical term directly: a city defined by density crossing a threshold, where strangers outnumber people you know and division of labor scales with the crowd. Structured as an order-of-magnitude escalation. Value-neutral: structure and scale only, no governance or politics.
Ten households packed a street, and the street starts to hum, a hundred streets stack together, and a district has come, a thousand districts link by transit, water, and wire, a million residents share one skyline reaching higher.
Sociologists call this density crossing a threshold line, past a certain number of neighbors, a city starts to define, strangers outnumber the people whose names you actually know, anonymity becomes normal, and specialization starts to grow.
One baker used to feed a village, now a million split the task, a driver, a builder, a teacher, each holding a narrower task, division of labor scales with the crowd packed inside the wall, more strangers, more roles, more systems threading through it all.
Zoom out past the towers to where the borders blur, a city is one dense node inside a nation's larger stir, count the order of magnitude: ten, then hundred, then thousand, then more, density and difference are the two rules a city keeps score.
Key Concepts: A city forms once population density crosses a threshold — strangers begin to outnumber people you personally know | Density drives division of labor: one role once shared by a few gets split among specialists | A city scales up from a chain of communities and scales down into a nation
Key Words: city, density, threshold, division of labor, anonymity
