Five Times the World Went Quiet

Mass extinction events, several times in Earth's history when most living species died out at once, known together by scientists as the Big Five (end Ordovician, late Devonian, end Permian, end Triassic, and end Cretaceous), and how each time the survivors reshaped what life looked like afterward, including the small early mammals who diversified after the extinction that ended the age of non-bird dinosaurs. A companion to the earlier Vivix evolution songs, showing that the story of life includes real setbacks as well as growth.

Five times in the deep past, the world went almost still, Nearly everything alive walked close to the edge of the hill, No storm, no single ordinary day could shake the earth this way, Something huge and lasting turned the whole wide world to gray.

Five times the world went quiet, and five times life came back, Different from before, now finding a brand new track, Empty spaces waiting, room for someone new to try, Every quiet ending opens up a brand new sky.

Sometimes the seas grew burning hot, sometimes a mountain fell from the sky, Small survivors held on tight, roots still gripping, spores still nearby, Morsel was too small to notice, tucked beneath a fallen log, When the dust had settled down, the land stood open, clear of fog.

Animo and Planta, Fungo, Microbi too, Every kingdom lost some members, and every kingdom grew back through, Life keeps bending like a river, finding some new way to flow, Feathered cousins of the giants still go flying, high and low.

Five times the world went quiet, and five times life came back, Different from before, now finding a brand new track, Empty spaces waiting, room for someone new to try, Every quiet ending opens up a brand new sky.

Key Concepts: Mass extinction events, several times in Earth's history when most living species died out at once, known together by scientists as the Big Five (end Ordovician, late Devonian, end Permian, end Triassic, end Cretaceous) | The end Permian extinction was the largest, wiping out most marine species | Survivors of each extinction filled the empty ecological space left behind, reshaping what life looked like afterward | Small early mammals survived the extinction that ended the age of non-bird dinosaurs and later diversified; birds are the living descendants of dinosaurs

Characters: Morsel (a small mammal survivor character, new, representing early mammals after the Cretaceous extinction), Animo, Planta, Fungo, Microbi (the four kingdom characters from Meet the Living Kingdoms, referenced as each losing and regaining members across every extinction)

Key Words: extinction, survivor, volcano, asteroid, recover, kingdom

Archetypal simplification: Real mass extinction causes are still actively studied and debated (the Permian extinction in particular likely involved several combined causes, not volcanoes alone), and exact death tolls and timings vary by source. The song keeps the true core facts (five widely recognized major extinction events, each followed by a real reshaping of which life forms became common afterward, and real survivor lineages like early mammals and dinosaur descendant birds) while simplifying each event's specific cause to one clear, memorable detail.
