Spacetime

[SPACE] I am three directions, length and width and height, the room where matter waits. [TIME] I am one direction only, forward, marking out the dates. [SPACE] Separately we made sense in an older, slower kind of physics. [TIME] Together we became spacetime, replacing the separation that held. [BOTH] Four dimensions fused as one, three of space and one of time combined. Every event you can name sits at one point along this four-dimensional line. [SPACE] Move fast enough through me and distances measurably shrink and compress. [TIME] Move fast enough through me and clocks measurably tick out less. [BOTH] Space and time trade with each other, the faster you move, the more they exchange. What looks like pure space to one observer looks part time to another, rearranged. [SPACE] Mass bends me, a planet dents the fabric, and nearby paths curve in reply. [TIME] Mass slows me too, a clock near a planet ticks slower than a clock up in the sky. [BOTH] Gravity is not a pull reaching across empty space at all. Gravity is geometry, curved spacetime telling every falling object where to fall. [SPACE] Cross into a black hole's horizon and my directions rotate and swap. [TIME] Falling toward the center becomes as unavoidable as time itself, and it will not stop. [BOTH] Nothing with mass can ever reach the speed of light, the cosmic speed limit stands. That speed connects space and time together, the same in every observer's hands. [BOTH] Spacetime, fused and absolute, curved and stretched and tied in one. Space tells matter where to move, and matter tells space what it has done.
