The Ant and the Grasshopper

A musical retelling of Aesop's fable about an Ant who hauled grain all summer, a Grasshopper who fiddled, and the door that opened in the snow

Little Ant marched through the golden hay, Gathering grain for a winter's day. Grasshopper sang in the warm sunshine, "Why do you work? The weather's fine!"

Ant lifts a grain, Ant lifts another, Stacking them high for a long cold winter. Grasshopper fiddles in the warm sweet hay, "Plenty of time," is what he likes to say.

"Come and dance!" said Grasshopper, leaping in the breeze, "Summer lasts forever underneath the trees!" Ant kept marching, Ant kept carrying, grain upon her back, "Winter's coming, friend," she said, "and snow will fill the track."

Autumn leaves came tumbling down in red and gold and brown, Grasshopper kept fiddling as they drifted to the ground. Ant stacked seeds and berries high inside her cozy hill, Ready for the frosty nights, the ice, the winter chill.

Then the snow came swirling in, the wind began to blow, Grasshopper was shivering with nowhere left to go. "Please, dear Ant, I'm hungry and I'm frozen to the bone!" Ant opened up her door and said, "You don't have to be alone."

"Eat with me and warm yourself beside my little fire, But promise me next summer you'll prepare before you tire." Grasshopper said, "Thank you, friend, I finally understand, Next year I'll work beside you, and we'll do it hand in hand!"
