The Fox and the Stork

A musical retelling of Aesop's fable about treating others as you wish to be treated

"Come for dinner!" called the fox. "I've made soup for me and you!" He ladled it on a great flat plate And said, "Dig in! Enjoy my stew!"

The stork just tapped her long thin beak Against the shallow dish. She couldn't sip, she couldn't slurp-- She couldn't eat one bit of this!

Fox lapped it up -- slurp, slurp, slurp! "Delicious, don't you think?" Stork watched him with a quiet eye And didn't even blink.

"Come for dinner!" called the stork A week from that same day. "I've cooked a meal to share with you-- I hope that you can stay!"

She poured it in a tall thin jar And said, "Dig in! It's true, I made this recipe with care, And all of it's for you!"

The fox pushed in his furry nose-- The jar was long and thin. He licked the rim, He sniffed the top, But nothing could get in!

Stork dipped her beak down deep inside And ate up every drop. "Delicious, don't you think?" she smiled. Fox's jaw went flop.

Now Fox sat hungry, Fox sat still, His tummy rumbled low. He thought about that flat, flat plate From not so long ago.
