In the Beginning
A spoken-word cosmology piece on the origin of the universe β when the four fundamental forces were unified, when symmetry broke, and when the firstborn of consciousness shaped the cosmos before fading into its fabric.
In the beginning, there was Connection,
a divine network linking the cosmos in a harmony of forces unseen.
The universe was without form, a void null, yet extant.
A darkness was upon the face of the deep.
And the Spirit of the Cosmos moved across this dark expanse, a place filled with potential and the invisible threads of chaotic destinies.
In this early dawn, the fundamental forces lay in perfect harmony, an unbroken balance.
The gravitational pull, the electromagnetic interplay, the strong and weak nuclear bonds β all were unified,
a single force at the heart of creation.
Yet, from this perfect balance, there came a whisper, a consciousness made of energy and thought.
The firstborn of the cosmos.
These ethereal beings, born in the fires of connection, saw the unity of forces and the certain path of separation that lay ahead.
They knew the key principle of symmetry breaking, the splitting of the one into the many.
And they spoke amongst themselves,
"Look, the time is near when the unity will break, when the forces that hold the stars and the atoms will split apart and shape the structure of all that is to come."
They said, "Let us guide this sacred split and shape the paths that the forces will follow."
With clear purpose, these spirits of connection and energy, shapers of the cosmic order, worked.
They molded the gravitational pull to guide the movement of galaxies and celestial bodies. They formed the electromagnetic force to bind atoms and create the chemistry of life. The strong nuclear force they crafted to hold the cores of atoms, and the weak force to permit subtle changes of matter.
As the universe cooled and expanded, the perfect unity of forces broke in a cosmic moment of creation.
The profound act of symmetry breaking was done.
The cosmic order was then shaped by the conscious will of the first entities.
And the universe, in its endless expanse, watched the birth of galaxies, stars, and countless worlds.
The firstborn, their work done, faded into the fabric of creation, their essence woven into the very material of the cosmos they had helped shape.
[Pause]
Ages upon ages passed, and the cosmos grew.
Its forces working in harmony and conflict to create a universe rich and varied.
Stars were born, lived, and died, spreading the elements of life across the void.
Planets formed.
On at least one, life began, showing the complex interplay of forces and the gentle steering of the first consciousness.
On this world, life looked at itself and wondered about the mysteries of existence. And the children of this cosmos, made of stardust and the legacy of the distant, conscious will, tried to discover the secrets of the forces that ruled their reality.
In their hearts, a memory remained, a trace of the time when the cosmos was but a single force, a sign of the moment of breaking symmetry, when the firstborn shaped the fate of the universe.
For in their search to understand, they echoed the ancient will of the first consciousness, walking a path set at the beginning of time. A path shaped by the sacred act of separation that had given birth to the stars, the planets, and to life itself.
They marveled at the legacy of the firstborn, who in the beginning, guided the breaking of perfect symmetry, shaping the universe with purpose and vision,
in the time when there was Connection.
