Mass Is How Much Stuff
A kid bounces a giant beach ball with one finger (easy!) and can barely lift a fist-sized rock (surprisingly hard!) to learn that mass isn't about how big something looks, it's about how much matter is packed inside.
There's a beach ball in the yard, big as a whole entire chair, I gave it one soft tap and it went sailing through the air, Boing! It bounced off the fence and came bouncing back to me, 'Cause that huge ball is mostly puffed-up, thin, breezy air inside!
Then I found a rock as big as my whole entire fist, I reached to pick it up, thought "this one won't be missed," But OOF! It barely budged, way heavier than it looked, That rock was solid all the way through, packed and cooked!
Mass is how much stuff is really packed inside, Not how big it looks, not how wide, One little tap sends the beach ball flying, 'Cause there's only a little air packed in there, no denying!
It's not magic that the rock is heavy for its size, It's just how much matter got packed inside, The ball is thin plastic wrapped around a little puff of air, The rock is solid stone, packed tight, no gaps in there!
Everything you touch, that's matter, through and through, Your shoe, this microphone, the air, and you! Solid, liquid, or a gas you can't even see, That's all matter, it's what fills up space, all three!
Let's play a game, guess which one's got more mass, A body-sized fluffy pillow, or a rock as small as glass? You'd think the great big pillow wins for sure, But that little rock outweighs it, packed down to the core!
Mass is how much stuff is really packed inside, Not how big it looks, not how wide, So next time something's tiny, don't be fooled too quick, Pick it up carefully, packed stuff plays a trick!
Big and puffy doesn't mean it's heavy, hear it plain, Small and solid can outweigh it easily, Mass is about the packing, not the size of the box, Now go lift something small and feel how heavy it really is!
