The Moth Who Changed Her Coat

A speckled moth sat still as still, On pale bark high upon the hill, A hungry bird flew looking round, "No moth up there!", not to be found!

Blend right in! Blend right in! The speckled moth just disappears, Blend right in! Blend right in! Safe another hundred years!

puff... puff... soot everywhere!

Then smoky chimneys colored the trees, Bark turned dark as a starless breeze, Now speckled moths stood out like a shout, The hungry bird found every one about!

But one dark moth, from wingtip to wingtip, Matched the sooty bark, sip by sip, The bird flew past, it never knew, That dark moth's babies were dark moths too!

Blend right in! Blend right in! Dark wings win when the bark turns black, Blend right in! Blend right in! The color of survival keeps changing back!

flap flap... shh!

Whatever the bark is, that's the wing that stays.
